Lake Atitlán

The incredibly crystal clear Lake Atitlán has been called the most beautiful lake in the world. It is also one of the centers of trade for different Mayan groups, trading to each other as well as to tourists and whole-sellers, dealing in particularly elaborate handicrafts and textiles. During the internal conflict the areas around the lake were very affected by the war between the military and the guerillas. Today we can visit the monuments, for example the altar made in honor of Father Stanley Rother, who was shot to death in 1981 for standing up for his poor parishoners.

Tikal

Once the ceremonial center of the Ancient Maya people, the ruins of Tikal were rediscovered in 1955. They comprise the largest collection of Mayan ruins ever excavated. Now a National Park covering 358 square miles of primes rainforest, Tikal is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna, including spider and howler monkeys, ocelots, jaguars, and almost 250 bird species. In 1979, UNESCO declared Tikal a World Heritage Site because of its exceptional natural and cultural value. You cannot visit Guatemala without seeing Tikal!
